The economy and state budget shortfalls in the State of California have gained the attention of media outlets across the country. As a result, the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), the largest public employee pension fund in the country with over $200 billion in value, received some negative attention from the media and the state’s citizens.

In September of 2009, CalPERS, at the recommendation of Ogilvy PR, engaged with c308 Marketing to develop a website to counter misinformation or misinterpreted context. This included issues related to pension security, investment strategies, national health care reform, and pension financing.

Solution:
CalPERS Responds, a website intended to educate—and separate fact from fiction—about issues. The site also details CalPERS’ response related to pensions, investments, and national health care reform.

The information was delivered in three formats:
  • Myths v. Facts, designed to take on misinformation directly.
  • Issues Update, to address specific issues or specific editorial coverage of CalPERS. Issues ranging from corrections to Wall Street Journal editorials, to public praise and support of national congressional policy.
  • Insight Video, created to personalize the message and give access to CalPERS leaders.
